Dear Future Author: 1st Draft

(whispers) “NO ONE sees this version.” Rarely does anything great start off beautiful. Having said that, writing is indeed a process. The key in your 1st draft is to get words on paper, let your thoughts flow. As hard as it may be, don’t get too caught up with spelling or sentence structure. Allow yourself a bit of grace to make mistakes.

In telling yourself the story first, be detailed. Consider what you felt during an experience. Consider your reactions. Describe your environment. What was the weather like? What were you wearing?

Also, don’t worry about writing too much at this point. Write your heart out. In this case, it really is better to have too much, than not have enough and then find yourself scramming to come up with more content.

31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes ~ Day 4: Why

It’s been a loooooonggg time since I’ve written here or participated in Five Minute Fridays, but here I am after receiving an email about the 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes led by Kate Motaung. So the goal is to write for five minutes on the given writing prompt.

So the clock begins now:

Let me just say I’ve learned to turn my “Why?” into “What do you want me to gain from this, Lord?”But I’d be deceiving you and myself if I say it doesn’t still surface? Why am I being overlooked? Why is no one investing in me? Why this? Why that??? Which then leads to “What am I doing wrong?” etc. I tell you why??? Because we’re not to seek validation from man, but from God. If something’s happening that we don’t like, we should be asking, “What am I to learn from this?” as opposed to “Why me?” Because with every situation is an opportunity for some type of growth, whether it be for you, the other person, or both.

Another perspective, why do good? Why continue in your well-doing when there is no reciprocation? Because your kindness, your well-doing, your love, your encouraging word is like a seed. A seed that’s planted for growth. A seed that’s planted for God to water… time’s up… We can’t always see what’s happening undercover, underground, or underneath. God is always at work. The next time you think “Why…?” I want you to think of these words spoken by Pastor Steven Furtick, “It… Had… to… Happen!!!”
